What Will We Do at Girls State Every Day?

We've got six days to pack in a lot of good times and information. Here is what you can expect each day.

After you register drop off your stuff at your residence hall room. If interested, head to Newspaper orientation and/or go to choir, drum, piano auditions. After registration and auditions you'll meet your city and Girls State staff. Following supper you'll start functioning as a city– already! Your city will elect a few committee positions and start the city official nomination process.

Monday

women in government panelCity functioning! Today you will elect your city officials and start functioning as a city. Group pictures are taken today and you will have the option of purchasing them. Remember during functioning think "business casual" for dress. Platform and campaign committees will meet and organize (these are elected positions – so if you're interested, come prepared to get involved). The afternoon includes a neat opportunity for Girls State: the "Women in Government Panel" that consists of prominent women in government in the state of North Dakota. We will start county government this day also. Did we mention that we have "Skit Night" coming up on Wednesday? You will be doing a skit as a city (another good reason to bring costumes) so start thinking of ideas.

Dress in your party's Girls State shirt and get ready for Political Party Conventions! This day is spent mostly in convention determining your party's platform (belief statements) and nominating people for state offices. Whistle stop takes place in the evening. It's a fun twist to campaigning. Candidates will give a 30 second campaign speech that can be comedic or serious. (Costumes might come in handy).

Wednesday
City 8, 2007 in their "Thriller" costumesIt's back to your county you go for County functioning. Spend the day nomination and electing your county officials. You'll function as a county (the most popular function is a good ol' jury trial). You'll also be campaigning for state-wide offices throughout the day. That evening is the much anticipated Skit Night. We also have some special guests from the American Legion….oh, and did we mention that the Boys State governor will also be here to speak with us?

Thursday
And the winner is…. Today is all about State Government! After statewide election results we'll function as a state. The House, Senate, Public Service Commission, State Supreme Court and Governor's Cabinet will meet throughout the day.

Friday
The week is over already? Whoa! Start the day with rehearsal for the day's ceremonies. After lunch is the Inauguration ceremony immediately followed by Graduation and the Candle Lighting Ceremony. (The Candle Lighting ceremony is really cool!) Parents and friends are encouraged to attend. Then it's back to the Residence Halls to pack up and say goodbye to your new friends.
