Things started getting exciting the moment the Staters began to arrive!

Sunday afternoon Girls Staters were busy registering, unpacking and getting a head start on being involved by audition for choir, piano, drum and auditions and newspaper staff.

Girls State was officialy kicked off an opening session in the Chester Fritz Auditorium. 2010 Girl State Governor Dani Askew gave a welcome address to the assembly. UND�s First Lady Marcia Kelley greeted the citizens to the University of North Dakota. Dana Thoreson, Director of Government, introduced the North Dakota Auxiliary Staff and Girls State Board. Lauren Hoffman, Director of Government, introduced other special guests that assist with the program throughout the week.

That evening the Staters learned about city government in- which was the majority of them- their first �college� lecture. Dana Harsell of UND�s Political Science department and Kendra Fershee of UND�s Law school presented information on the legislative and judicial aspects of city government.

The last event of the evening was to conduct city elections. The cities appointed platform and campaign committee members for each political party. The mayors were also elected. The 2011 Mayors and their hometowns are:

City 1: Breanna Burgard, Strasburg
City 2: Bobbi Jo Kronberg, Ellendale
City 3: Bethany Pelmel, Starkweather
City 4: Katy Tellinghuisen, Horace
City 5: Michaela Halvorson, Milnor
City 6: Alexandra Mills, Oaks
